The SPC Turkey Trot is an untimed, fun run/walk the Saturday before Thanksgiving each year at South Potomac Church in White Plains, Maryland. The SPC Striders health and fitness community group organizes the SPC Turkey Trot with its host, South Potomac Church.
Proceeds will benefit SPC Benevolence Ministries, including Turkey Baskets and Christmas Shop. Last year’s 2016 Christmas Shop helped 525 individuals “shop” for toys, jewelry, bicycles, clothing, and more at no cost to them.
Everyone who completes the course receives a completion medal, mug, and goodie bag to commemorate the run/walk. For the competitive runners out there, the 1st Place Male, Female, and Youth earn a special prize! Additionally, a raffle gives away dozens of door prizes once all participants have completed the course, so stick around and mingle afterward.
Starting in 2016, the SPC Turkey Trot is proud to offer a turkey petting zoo, with real-life turkeys! The turkeys live happily on a local farm with Sharon Rabie, an Education Associate with the Alice Ferguson Foundation and staff member at Hard Bargain Farm in Accokeek, Maryland. No worries–the turkeys aren’t for eating! Children and adults alike are encouraged to come learn about turkeys, their natural habitat and behaviors, and of course, pet them at the petting zoo.
Enjoy the music, fellowship, play area for kids with games, hot apple cider, snacks, and lots and lots of door prizes. Get moving with your family before your Thanksgiving feast!
Participants of all ages can either walk or run a trail course approximately the length of a 5K. Some of the course is cross-county through a wooded trail; another portion is a 1-mile stretch on pavement. The course starts and finishes in the parking lot of South Potomac Church, with music contributed by our Audio-Visual Booth volunteers.
Both runners and walkers can participate in the full-course, but we ask strollers stay on the 1-mile pavement walk. (Sorry, no dogs are allowed anywhere on the course at this time.)
Refreshments are provided at two water break stations along the course. Event volunteers will cheer you on, point you in the right direction along the trail, and answer any questions you may have while walking or running.
Fun Facts Raised $1,200 on our debut in 2014! 3 years running! Proceeds go to SPC Benevolence Ministries!
